Say Hello to Lower Utility Bills with Nest
  • Cost-Savings
  • home tech
The Nest 3rd Generation Learning Thermostat from Nest Labs, is the newest smart home device you are going to want for your home! As more and more devices are made “smart” for home use, few are actually improving quality of life and saving you money. Usually it is a trade off of sorts. But now, with Nest, you can not only improve your comfort at home, but you can also reduce your bills.

For those unfamiliar with the Nest, it is one of the original smart home devices. Now with its 3rd generation on the market, Nest’s slogan is “We reinvent things” and that is exactly what they have done. They take the “unloved products in your home and make simple thoughtful things”. In this case, Nest Labs has gone after the ugly box on your wall and simply reinvented it. The Nest thermostat brings its users a simple design with a modern feel and futuristic technology. The Nest thermostat learns what temperature you like, so you are comfortable when at home and when out on the town, the AC is turned off and saving you money. The best part – there is no need to program it because it learns when you are home and when you are away. And even better, it is Wi-Fi enabled, allowing you to access it from anywhere with an Internet connection.

When setting out to reinvent the thermostat, Nest’s goal was to save consumers money while adding a touch of modern design. Despite the high price of the product, $250 retail value, it saves users around 12% on heating bills and nearly 15% on cooling bills annually. Nest determined nearly all their customers paid off the thermostat with the savings on their utility bills in less than 2 years. Nest has also teamed up with many utility companies to provide a energy savings kickback to its customers.

With the 3rd generation now on the market, it has a few new features, my favorite being the Farsight. Now, Nest can tell when you walk in the room and turns on the display to show you the set temperature and the current time. You can even choose from an analog or digital clock face. It also has a new feature where a green leaf appears on the display. The purpose of this new icon is to tell you the ideal temperature for the thermostat to be set to get the most cost savings on your bill.

Nest has also made the installation process as simple as possible, with a detailed video and description on their website. Of course if you aren’t tech savvy, we can help with installation and give you a step by step training session on how to use your new thermostat and get the most out of it!
