Old fashioned recipe boxes are a thing of the past. Internet recipe sites have taken over! You can simply put in the keyword of what you want (Shepperd’s pie) and BOOM, there you go, several wonderful recipes. You have numerous different options to choose from and most of them are very good. Allrecipes.com gets 25,000,000 estimated monthly visitors per eBizMBA in July of 2017. That is a lot! I find almost 100% of my recipes online these days.
It was Colonel Sanders who said “To me, my recipes are priceless.” and how right he was.
If you are like me, I like to bring my laptop or tablet into the kitchen to follow the recipe and make sure I’m not missing a thing. I don’t like to waste ink and paper printing the recipes. If you are also like me, you may have accidentally gotten flour or some substance all over the keyboard (hope it wasn’t sugar) or had it expose to water or excessive heat.
My motivation for this blog was stemmed from my experience with a large cup of flour and how it spilled all over my keyboard. I honestly don’t even recall how it happened, but it did. I will never really know. The flour along with the moisture really made for a bad situation that took me a ton of time to clean up.
What is an amateur chef to do? How do we protect our computers in the kitchen?
First and foremost make sure your laptop has an automatic backup service so that no matter what disaster may come your way, you can always get your photos, music and other important files back quickly and easily. We at Tech Help Boston use recommend Carbonite for all our clients. It’s convenient, inexpensive and doesn’t require any additional equipment or attention!
Keep your computer away from the sink at all times. This would seem to go without saying but I think we forget when we are running around and putting ingredients together. I’ve noticed mine teetering on the side of the sink before but got very lucky. Even too much humidity can cause an issue so if it’s placed on top of the running dishwasher, it can get damp. Computers and moisture are a bad combination. Humidity and moisture can cause corrosion and ultimately damage. You can put your computer on a separate table in the workspace vs. the kitchen counter to prevent this. I found this Mobile Laptop Cart on Amazon for $$64.03.
Cover your keyboard with something to prevent splashes of food and fluids. Some people suggest using cling wrap to put over the top of the computer keys. This solution didn’t seem to work too well when I tried it. Remember that regardless of the advice you read, do not place a laptop inside a bag because it will cause it to overheat and burn out!!
If you do get some dry crumbs in the keyboard used compressed air which you can find in many stores. You should also be able wipes intended specifically for computer screens. I found this kind of costly blower, the EasyGo CompuCleaner – electric Computer Blower for Electronic Devices which I found on Amazon for $59.97.
Note: Always make sure to check out your owner’s manuals ensure you follow their guidelines for cleaning. Using cleaners not intended for your computer can damage it.
Make sure your computer isn’t exposed to high heat. Don’t place it on the oven or hot stove. If your kitchen gets extra hot, you may need to move it into an area with more air flow.
So, what do you do if your computer does get exposed to water?
1. Turn the Computer Off. Also, to remove the charging cable from a laptop. Also, unplug the mouse, keyboard and any external parts. This prevents damage to those items.
3.Turn the Computer Upside Down Turn it Over and Keep it Open. Gravity will help the water drain out as much as possible.
4. Wipe up Any Extra Liquid. Anything visible wet needs to be dried with a soft towel.
5. If the Laptop Won’t Work, Call the Experts at Tech Help Boston. In the event that the damage is significant enough that your computer won’t turn back on it’s very important to call us for data recovery and computer repair.
