5 Steps to Secure Your Wi-Fi Network
  • Education

Almost every one of us has at least one device connected to the internet. We use the internet for everything – online banking, credit card payment, flight bookings, hotel reservations, connecting with our loved ones, and any activities for leisure.

Not just that, innovative appliances like security systems, air conditioners, and home gadgets make use of the internet connection. So, how much do you rely on your home Wi-Fi? How secure is your Wi-Fi network?

When not taken care of, your office or home can be a playground for scammers and hackers that can easily access your personal information and bank details. Fortunately, you can secure your Wi-Fi network against unauthorized access with these simple steps.

1. Change the Default name of your WIFI

Many manufacturers give all their wireless routers a default name. In most cases,it is the company’s name. It is better to change the network’s SSID to something that does not disclose any personal information, thereby throwing hackers off their mission.

2. Change your router’s preset password

Change the Wi-Fi network password to prevent strangers from getting on to your network and;

Change the router admin password which lets you manage the administrative side of the device. If a hacker can get into this, they could change the entire settings of the router, including the Wi-Fi password.

3. Enable network encryption

Encrypting scrambles the information sent through your network. That makes it harder for others to see what you’re doing or get your personal information. You encrypt your network by simply updating your router settings to either WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal.

4. Have a good firewall

A “firewall” is designed to protect computers from malware, viruses, and other harmful intrusions. Check that your wireless router’s firewall is turned on. In case your router doesn’t have such a firewall, make sure you install a good firewall solution on your system to guard against malicious access attempts on your wireless network.

5. Use VPNs to access the network

Many companies and organizations have a VPN. VPNs allow employees to connect securely to their network when away from the office. VPNs encrypt connections at the sending and receiving ends and keep out traffic that is not properly encrypted. If a VPN is available to you, make sure you log onto it anytime you need to use a public wireless access point.

If you don’t know where to start, we have the best technicians who can come to your home or office and set up your WiFi network for you as soon as today. Give us a call and we’ll work on it immediately.
