Dear Dave – Delay Windows Updates or Give in and Apply Them?

Its YOUR opportunity to ask a question, any tech related question and we will do our level best to give you our best advice.  If you want to submit a question, just send me an email to david@techhelpboston.com and add “Dear Dave” to the subject line.

On to our question …

Dear Dave,

I’m a long time customer of your company, working with Bill N. He recently (early Feb) installed a new Dell laptop for me with, of course, Win10. Before that I had several good years with an earlier laptop running Win 7. Now I hear repeated warnings about Win 10 updates, and especially the latest, Version KB4549951. Is it safe to restart my computer? So far I’ve just been pausing the update(s) in 7-day increments, but obviously can’t do this forever. So what should I do…?

Thanks for your help and for all the previous emails,

Best,

Richard in Reading

Dear Richard,

Hello!

Yes, I would allow the updates to process and update your system.  I say this for 2 reasons – a) you want the latest security updates for protection and b) its inevitable that the updates will have to run at some point.

Not to say that there is always a small risk of instability when these updates are pushed out, but unless we are aware of a specific incompatibility or instability issue with an update (which on this, we are not) then there is more reward to the small risk.

Hope that helps, and always feel free to reach out.

Thanks for being a great client, it’s very much appreciated.

Let me know how it goes and keep those questions coming!

Dave
